Specialized Service With a Personal Touch

The roots of M*I*S*C begin back in the early 1980’s with Fred Mackta. He worked with DB Schenker Inc. who had established a customs bonded freight station in Richmond, VA. Here they received customs-in-bond, LCL freight destined for central Virginia,as well as providing crating, skidding and other packaging services. In the late ‘80’s, Schenker decided to close down their warehouse operations in Richmond, but Fred saw the demand for these services plus the potential for expansion. In 1989, Fred and his wife, Linda created Multi Interest Service Corp. (M*I*S*C) and quickly established a reputation for specialized service with a personal touch.

The Mackta’s landed on this long company name with the acronym that immediately makes one think of the abbreviation for the word“miscellaneous” and this was intentional. M*I*S*C handles such a wide variety of services,the acronym seemed to just fit. They expanded the business to handle export crating, hazmat packaging and movement services for a wide variety of personal and commercial products. The export side of the business grew in the 1990’s to include container loading, blocking and bracing. In the early 2000’s, the international community established IPPC protocols to ensure that wood packaging materials did not transfer wood borne insects. This seemed a natural fit for M*I*S*C, so we became certified to offer IPPC compliant products and services.

In 2006, Fred and Linda decided to retire and sold the business to Greg and Jill Blouch. Greg and Jill have maintained the personal oversight of customer projects which sets us apart from many larger organizations. We maintain an experienced and dedicated crew to ensure our products are made correctly to customer’s specifications and sturdy enough to complete its journey, whether it’s across town or across the world.

We have expanded to Milspec packaging for government contractors and added vapor barrier and shrink wrap packaging for the demand we’ve seen grow over the past decade. M*I*S*C is celebrating its 35th anniversary! Over the years we have handled a very diverse array of consignments. We have crated and shipped radio-astronomy equipment to a mountain top in Chile. We packaged and crated an entire movie set, moving from Richmond to Prague, including historic artifacts from the 1700’s. We skidded and loaded a stone mausoleum to be shipped back to China for a reclamation program. We have shipped planes, boats, all types of automobiles and motorcycles. We have crated numerous pieces of industrial equipment as well as statues and delicate antiques. It is our greatest desire to please our customers and we strive to achieve this daily.
